Suffolk Norse organises county-wide swimming week

August 2013

Over 3200 children from 95 schools around the county recently took part in a series of swimming events organised by Suffolk Norse.

The Suffolk Great East Swim Outreach Events, part of a programme by Suffolk County Council to engage young people in swimming, saw the children simulate open water swimming, where participants cover distances from half a mile to five kilometres, by swimming circuits around various pools in the county.

Each child swam for 4 minutes covering an average of 100 metres, with the total distance swum 349,492 metre or a staggering 217 miles.

“It was a really fun week,” commented Carol Lukins, Suffolk Norse Swimming Manager, “The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was encouraging to see the level of ability of even the younger swimmers in Suffolk schools.”

Bawdsey Primary School contributed an impressive distance of 4172.25 metres to the overall total.

Suffolk Norse invited schools to enter teams for the grand finale of the programme, a county-wide event and gala at the Mid Suffolk Leisure centre.

Ten schools were drawn at random to take part in the final event on 21st June which will also see guest celebrity, Olympic silver medallist David Davies, giving a swimming masterclass.
