School Swimming 2014

The importance of swimming has been recognised by its inclusion in the National Curriculum as a statutory requirement for all pupils who, by the end of Key Stage 2, should be able to meet or exceed these minimum expectations.

The 2014 PE National Curriculum states: All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of
    at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively such as front crawl,
    backstroke and breaststroke

  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Suffolk Norse Swimming is committed to achievement beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum. It seeks to ensure that at least 60% of all year 6 pupils that swim with the service achieve its Personal Safety Award.
This award requires pupils to:

  • be confident, competent and safe in deep water,

  • have an awareness of how to be safe when playing in, on and near water.
